Creative Industries in Mexico

Mexican creativity is recognized around the world. Aware of the Creative Industries' potential and their strategic role, Mexico is decided to set itself as one of its main players worldwide and to become the node by excellence for the production of audiovisual and interactive contents in Spanish.

According to the study Industrias creativas y obra protegida, by the Mexican Institute of Competitiveness (IMCO) in collaboration with the Motion Picture Association (MPA), Creative Industries represent 6.7% of Mexico's GDP. Following data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), these industries generate more than a million jobs and their economic impact is higher than the one from other industries such as Agriculture and Electric Energy Generation and Distribution.

In 2015, more than 140 films were produced in Mexico, ranking the country among the top 20 producers. By its attendance to movie theaters, Mexico is the fourth market in the world. In the same year, Mexican talent was recognized with 27 awards from the Cannes Lions International Festival, including its first Grand Prix.

Mexico is part of a new group of countries with great possibilities for the Videogame industry development. It is the largest market in Latin America and it is among the 15 top ones globally.

The country is the top exporter of creative goods in Latin America, exporting 5.4 billion dollar in during 2015.

In that year the main destinations for the Mexican exports of creative goods were the United Sates (86.0%), Canada (1.6%) and Luxembourg (1.6%). With exports larger than 4.3 billion dollar, in 2015 Mexico was the United States third supplier of the industry, only after China and France, standing above countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Korea and India.

It is worth to mention that more than one billion people in more than one hundred countries around the world watch Mexican TV contents.

Companies established in Mexico

After Brazil, Mexico is the second Latin American country with the higher number of videogame development companies.

The country has an ecosystem of big, medium and small size companies of animation and visual effects (VFX) with global competitive quality. The animation companies established in Mexico produce export contents for firms like Nickelodeon, Cartoon network y Ankama, while the VFX companies have specialized themselves as Hollywood suppliers for movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides, Tron Legacy, After Earth, Gone Girl, Dead Pool and Her, fulfilling the highest security and certification international standards.

Strengths of the Creative Industries in Mexico


  • Mexico is the ninth global center of talent specialized in Information Technologies and the main talent hub in Latin America, according to data from ANUIES and CONACyT.
  • More than 110 students complete their undergraduate studies majoring in Animation and Digital Design, Films, Digital Communication, Web Media Communication, Image and Sound Design, Interactive Design, Digital Media Engineering and Interactive Animation Engineering.

Competitive costs. According to KPMG's Competitive Alternatives 2016, Mexico is 33.0% and 36.0% more competitive than the United States in operative costs for Software Development (original technology development and software packages' applications development) and Digital Entertainment (videogames and publishing houses), respectively.

Infrastructure and logistics. There are first class production facilities in Mexico, such as the Estudios Baja, the largest aquatic set in the world, or the Estudios Churubusco, renown in the National and International film industry.


  • Mexico is between the United States, the largest market in the world valued in more than 500 billion dollar in 2016, and Latin America, the region with the estimated highest market growth (compound annual growth rate 2012-2016 of 9.7%).
  • There are 400 million Spanish speakers in the world. Experts' estimations state that, by 2050, there will be 530 Spanish speakers of which two thirds will live in the United States. This will make our neighbor one of the top markets for contents in Spanish in the world.

Technological vanguard. In 2015, Mexico finished its transition to digital TV, becoming the first Latin American country to achieve it. This will detonate an exponential growth in the TV industry, whereas it is by open signal, by subscription, cable TV or satellite TV.
